The origins of “Rocky Road”

Turns out they are a bit murky, with both Australia and the United States with a claim.   

In Australia, our claim dates back to the Australian Gold Rush in the 1850s. Unscrupulous businessmen, faced with spoiled confectionery from Britain, mixed them with nuts and low-quality chocolate to salvage their goods. The name "Rocky Road" was chosen to reflect the challenging journey to the goldfields.  

In America, dates back to the Great Depression and the claim is tied to ice cream. William Dreyer, an ice cream maker, combined chocolate ice cream with marshmallows and walnuts.  He named it Rocky Road to lift spirits during the Great Depression.
